When most people think about the Marines, they picture the six famous, simple words that make up the Corps’ slogan: “The Few, The Proud, The Marines.” Only two of the six words are not opinions. The other four are left to personal opinion; therefore, they are left to controversy. The Marine Corps slogan is largely left to the opinions of its readers, but it does accurately represent the United States Marine Corps because the Marine Corps doesn’t make claims about itself. Instead, they leave it to the public to think freely about the Corps.

When looking at “The Few,” one can notice that the Marine Corps is composed of roughly 175,000 active and reserve marines. While this number is just a small fraction compared to the other US military branches, it is almost the size of Great Britain’s entire military force. The Marine Corps is a small portion within the Department of the Navy. Because it is part of the Navy, it shares the Navy’s budget. In turn, the Corps can’t afford to support a massive force of equipment and personnel on a scale such as the US Army. Many people think the Marines are few in numbers because most marines are trained at, stationed in, or are protecting other branches of the military’s bases. They live in small detachments of one or two hundred, or in some cases only a dozen or less, on Army, Navy, or Air Force bases, surrounded by thousands of other service members.

On the subject of a marine’s pride, Marines, throughout history, have been and still are known for their boasting pride. This pride is on display in everything a marine does. Marines are taught to have the utmost confidence in their own abilities and the abilities of their fellow marines. Until that day the word “marine” could have meant anything from marine rebels, pirates, raiders, or the famous Royal British Marines (ancestors to the United States Marines). For years they served as the Navy’s defense, fighting not only physical battles but also political battles for survival. Before World War II, the “higharchy” of American government wanted to disband the Marines. Public demand after the war forced the Marine Corps to stay in existence. It is because of that strong spirit and support of the American people that “The Marines” can be spoken so proudly and confidently in every Marine Corps advertisement. Today, simply saying “Marines” can instill fear into the enemies of America, or it can give hope to her friends and allies.

While the slogan “The Few, The Proud, The Marines” seems relatively simple, a deeper investigation on what the words truly mean unveils the complexity of the very heart of the Corps and the men and woman who make it. It is true that the Marines have been outnumbered in almost every single engagement they have ever been in, but they have never used every one of their 175,000 strong military personnel in one war. The level of someone’s pride is in the eye of the beholder, because pride cannot be disputed nor can it be measured. Therefore, every marine can claim that he or she is proud. Today, because of commercials and historical military engagements, the word marines is almost always related to the United States Marines.

The Marine Corps can respond very quickly to any threat to the US national interest. What makes the Marines unique is that they can respond to threats on the ground, in the sea and in the air.
B.History- The Marines Corps has a long and distinguished history- stretching back to 1775.
C.Deployments- During any deployments, Marines take on a huge variety of roles that are not just solely combat orientated. They have key training roles within the emergent national armies in Iraq and Afghanistan. They also help with humanitarian efforts in these places.
D.Ground Combat Roles- These include; infantry, artillery, reconnaisance, intelligence, assault amphibian, tanks and combat engineering

2. A Lifetime of Achievement
Listed below are the most important elements to this reason.

A.Leadership Skills- A career in the Marine Corps will make you an effective leader. Leadership skills that can be used in many aspects of civilian life including business. Marines are taught to make good decisions quickly and to act instinctively.
B.Deployments in Africa- The Marines are working in many African nations to enable better peacekeeping and cooperation between and within countries. Work is going on within 19 countries including Ghana and Senegal.

3. A Better Life
Listed below are the most important elements to this reason.

A.Education- Marines can get access to subsidised higher education programs whilst still serving in the Marines Corps but also after their career in the Marines has finished. Up to 100% of the fees will be paid. The Marines Corps believe that men and women with higher education are a real asset to their communities.
